Lindsey Buck – Quiet Town (2025)
What began as learning a little piano grew into a singer-songwriter harnessing the raw passion, charm and powerhouse force of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Patti LaBelle and Chaka Khan; enter Lindsey Buck. Hitting the music scene later in life, the 40-year-old mother of two may still be up facing a never-ending basket of laundry, but she’s also the soulful vocalist enchanting audiences with soul-filled vocals. Her discography spans back to 2019 – at least according to Spotify – but this is our introduction to the US-based musician. Join us as we delve into her latest release, ‘Quiet Town’.
Following her well-received single ‘Breathe’, Buck takes another step into 2025 with ‘Quiet Town’. Recorded and produced with Elan Mehler, ‘Quiet Town’ is a simplistic piano-driven ballad highlighting the beauty and elegance of songs without bells and whistles. The piano leads you through the track; however, the interspersed percussion shimmers with a skin-tingling haunting that both chills and warms the melody. For me, the instrumentation is moving, but it is Buck’s vocals that up the ante on a stark, barebones single.
Melodically, the song is more than a beautiful arrangement; it is an outstanding expression of those early days of lockdown when streets emptied and isolation endured. With a strange stillness echoing in the music, you can easily feel the emotional weightiness of being in an eerie apocalyptic setting, but there is a sense of serenity to the “world on pause”. A disconcerting reason for the silence, but also a breath of air as the chaotic world came to a halt. A moment of clarity and tenderness in the stillness.
While this is my introduction to Lindsey Buck, ‘Quiet Town’ feels like a conversation between two friends instead of finding a new acquaintance. Within the sparse sound, there is unity like friends meeting for a cup of tea with a tin of chocolate biscuits by your side. Taken off her upcoming debut album The Laundry & The Ecstasy (set for release in September), ‘Quiet Town’ has me eager to hear more from this talented musician.
