Majorette – Steaks (2025)

With her signature blend of indie-pop sparkle, twee charm, and theatrical flair, singer-songwriter Majorette returns with the effervescent new single ‘Steaks’. The stunning track proves once again she’s in a sonic world of her own, and we’re lucky to visit.

Clocking in at just under three minutes, ‘Steaks’ is a masterclass in light-hearted existentialism. Over a breezy jangle-pop melody laced with twinkling keys and warm violin flourishes, Majorette muses on a curiously mundane event: returning a mystery steak left in the freezer of her new apartment. But from that seemingly minor dilemma blooms a wry, whimsical exploration of anxiety, self-talk, and imagined catastrophes.

Collaborators like Chris Williams on violin and Bianca Butler on bass give the track a grounded warmth, while Majorette’s vocals, both earnest and airy, float with narrative confidence. There’s something incredibly human in her delivery, where laughter and fear live in the same breath. All the while, the lush production was tracked and mixed at Livingrooms in Ridgewood, Queens.

Matching the song’s imaginative tone is its enchanting music video, shot entirely on 16mm in the style of a vintage Méliès silent film. Directed by long-time collaborator Paul DeSilva, the video stars Majorette as both a vaudevillian magician and her assistant, a visual metaphor for the internal tug-of-war the song so cleverly portrays. From handmade costumes to era-authentic lighting and practical effects, it’s a love letter to analogue filmmaking and the magic of DIY artistry.

Majorette’s ability to weave together narrative, visuals, and sound into a cohesive artistic statement is rare. ‘Steaks’ is a small universe built from quiet anxieties and joyful absurdities, where even the highest emotional stakes can be softened with a wink and a melody.

With a celebratory variety show tonight at NYC’s The Slipper Room, featuring everything from aerialists to ventriloquists, Majorette continues to blur the lines between pop musician and theatrical storyteller. As she builds on the momentum of her debut EP, Forever Starts Tuesday, and this year’s ‘Inner World’, Majorette is carving out a singular, enchanting space in indie music. ‘Steaks’ is a reminder that the little things, like freezer meat and overthinking, can still yield magic when filtered through Majorette’s sparkling lens.
