Mick J Clark – My Friend Evonne (2025)

We first came across singer-songwriter Mick J Clark in 2022 with his single ‘This Moment’; he found his way to our ears again in 2023 with ‘This Is Where My Heart Belongs’. While that was our introduction, Clark had been making music for the masses for at least 15 years – his Spotify notes the first streaming as 2011’s Notes Two. Now, I hear you ask: who is Mick J Clark? To put it succinctly and focusing on his seasoned musical career, Clark is a talented artist creating music to evoke emotion, advocate empowerment, and just wriggle into your head with infectious melodies. Join us as we delve into his single, ‘My Friend Evonne’.

Taken off his ten-track album Pole Position – an album that explores his versatility from soft rock ballad ‘Goodbye My Love’ to folk-driven ‘What Are We Together For’ – ‘My Friend Evonne’ taps its hat at vintage soul tinged by classic rock with a flair of folk and the beats of contemporary RnB. Self-composed and produced, the single showcases Clark’s passion for music with sophistication and maturity; however, just as there is sophistication, a shimmer of raw vulnerability exudes from ‘My Friend Evonne’.

While one might assume the vulnerability of the track leaning toward a saddened tune, ‘My Friend Evonne’ is the opposite. As it tugs on your heartstrings, a sliver of genuine sensitivity waivers with fragile delicacy; however, upbeat optimism and hope brim in a slight bounciness peeping from beneath the melody. Moreover, Clark’s gruff vocals are tinged with lighter, brighter, smile-inducing sunniness as he sings about his friend Evonne.

The track is an enjoyable listen from beginning to end, but, and this is for me, it is the vocals that are the stand-out element. The lyrics weave together in melodic harmony, yet they retain spoken-word sentiments, so it feels like you are having a conversation instead of just listening to charming words. Kind of like cursive handwriting – it’s all linked, but each letter holds individuality, in this case, each word.

Sincere, heart-warming and comfortable, ‘My Friend Evonne’ is a song to just…well, make you happy. I am eager to hear what else Clark has on offer with Pole Position and can’t wait to start listening.
