Moon Construction Kit – Long John Silver (2025)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Olivier Cornu, Moon Construction Kit explores the “…intersection of alternative pop, synth-pop, cinematic textures and late 60s influences” resulting in an immersive saunter through a kaleidoscopic sonic forest, with all the fairy-like sparkles shimmering along. From his self-titled debut EP in 2022 to the most recent single ‘Long John Silver’, Moon Construction Kit is building a unique sonic persona with obscure and eclectic sounds. Join me as I delve headfirst into his new single, ‘Long John Silver’.

According to Spotify, ‘Long John Silver’ is Moon Construction Kit’s first release in three years. Re-emerging on the streaming scene, the new track is a pivotal point as a change of direction for Olivier Cornu. Produced by Cornu with mixing by Guy Britton, ‘Long John Silver’ is more soothing than past tracks like ‘Stanley’ and ‘Dead Man Walking’; however, a toe-tapping infectiousness twirling in a sonic whirlpool remains evident.

Soft, gentle and laidback, ‘Long John Silver’ twinkles with languid tranquillity. The shimmering synths entwine with guitars and a bold drum pulsating in the background. Hypnotic and skin-tingling, the single drags us back to yesteryear, tipping its hat at Depeche Mode… then again, there is a contemporary indie-pop tone merging with old-school synth-pop giving it a modern-day edge.

While the instrumentation lingers in the air, the haunting voice of Cornu seems to take the fore despite its hushed execution. For me, it is the dulcet, dreamy vocals that lead the journey of ‘Long John Silver’, echoing the wistfulness and vulnerability  of the protagonist’s character.

“’Long John Silver’ is an epic and hypnotic journey into duality… the track’s cinematic feel echoes the song’s main character’s shifting nature and ambiguity… A song that lingers like a ghostly sea breeze… transporting listeners to a world both distant and familiar.” – Moon Construction Kit on ‘Long John Silver’

This was my introduction to Moon Construction Kit, so I was entirely unsure what to expect. Soft and silky, his music wriggled into my ear, twirled about my head, and left me feeling completely relaxed, albeit a little breathless. I cannot wait for Moon Construction Kit’s upcoming full-length album.
