Nico Lavette – Run Away (2025)
Between working in the rural areas of Australia – in the outback and as a grain handler on various depots – singer-songwriter Nico Lavette has been producing, composing, and creating music that speaks to your soul and not just your ears. Performing at various venues across the country, Lavette enchants audiences with his retro sounds and modern-day vibes. Moreover, his diverse sonic palette ranges from 70s funk to 60s psychedelic rock, along with 2000s neo-soul, and a hit of 90s indie-pop. The latest addition to his critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Run Away’.
The second single streaming on his Spotify, ‘Run Away’ is Lavette’s first offering since 2021’s ‘The Search’ – then again, this is Spotify, so it might not be altogether correct. Potentially the re-emergence of Lavette in the streaming world, ‘Run Away’ shifts from the funk-driven sounds of ‘The Search’, but retains a strong burst of retro funk layered along vintage jazz, soul, and indie-pop.
Self-recorded and produced, the new single is more than a fun, toe-tapping, catchy flood of music; it pushes you headfirst into a kaleidoscopic sonic whirlpool. Losing yourself in the fantastic colours of drums, soaring guitars, percussion, and a bold bass, there is a psychedelic ambience setting you off in a wistful haze of music. The melding of instrumentation embraces you, but interestingly, flits of guitar and drums seem to dominate, giving it a rock-tinged edge.
Nico Lavette can breathe life into yesteryear’s music, but it is the significance of organic sounds within a digital world that adds depth. Lavette refers to ‘Run Away’ as “…retro organic sounds trying to find a place in the AI-driven future”, and I have to admit it certainly shines with acoustic beauty, proving that you don’t need bells and whistles to make something exceptional.
In addition to the single, Nico Lavette released a music video for ‘Run Away’. You can view the video below and/or on his YouTube channel.
