Northern Hospitality – Memento (2025)
To me, the word hospitality has always alluded to something polite, courteous, and well-mannered niceties; however, it’s not quite the case with the group Northern Hospitality. Oh, by no means am I saying the UK-based group brashly tosses you aside without a care for your well-being. No, I’m just saying Northern Hospitality uses chaotic crashes, pounding drums, and scorching guitars to envelop you with a warm embrace inside the whirlwind of sound. Drawing together the skills of Gaz Price (vocals), Sean McCloskey (lead guitar), Nico Mouissie (bass), and Georgia Smith (drums), the group is placing itself as a fixture in the UK music scene.
Following the well-received 2024 singles, ‘Six Feet Underside’ and ‘Break Free’, Northern Hospitality return with a hard-hitting rush of indie-rock ala Kaiser Chiefs – oddly enough, one of the bands Northern Hospitality has previously supported. Clinging to the old-school rock scene, the group breathes refreshing life into nostalgic memories of jumping up and down, twirling about in an unabandoned bliss, while still crashing from pillar to post with the head-spinning music.
Pounding drums, crashing guitars, a bold bass, and Price’s obscure vocals both pull the proverbial band-aid off a wound while holding your hand as you tug along in the mire of confusion. Interesting, while there might be madness within ‘Memento’, its passion and strength is not tormented tumultuousness, but rather a “juggernaut of sound behind a tale of acceptance, making peace with your darkness and rising from the ashes.”
Celebrating the grittiness of life and the glory of making it to the other side, ‘Memento’ is a song of self-discovery and expression. This track is not our introduction to Northern Hospitality, but it is certainly another song to enjoy at high volume. I cannot wait for more from this exciting band!
