Paul Gehl – Chasing Shadows (2025)

Inspired by the likes of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul Gehl offers listeners hard-hitting, meaty rock with bold beats and a heavy attitude. Leaning toward classic rock, you can hear his passion for the genre; however, just as Gehl’s music turns its head toward the 1970s, it also clings to 90s alternative rock alongside a more contemporary hard rock tone. Join us as we jump headfirst into Gehl’s single, ‘Chasing Shadows’.

Entirely self-penned, composed, recorded and produced, ‘Chasing Shadows’ is a dedication to Gehl’s passion and commitment to his craft. I call Gehl an artist, and this is what he does – he creates art with meticulous care and liberating freedom. Hitting you between the eyes and dragging you back to the days of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, ‘Chasing Shadows’ is a twirling concoction of crashing drums, bold bass, and scorching guitars all bound with harmonic flair. Yet, as much as the tune is rhythmic and united, each element has its moment in the spotlight, ensuring you enjoy every aspect of the powerful rock song.

For me, the nostalgic whispers of Paul Gehl bring memories of bands like Uriah Heep blasting from my mum’s car radio while we head home on a Friday afternoon. The sound of Black Sabbath floating from my sister’s bedroom. With ‘Chasing Shadows’, there are hints of these iconic acts, as well as Gehl making his mark with Ozzie Osbourne-esque vocals that are both haunting and commanding.

Melodically, ‘Chasing Shadows’ glistens and gleams with a nostalgic sheen, but it is the lyricism that brings an ageless poignancy to the track. Touching on the topic of material wealth, capitalism, and “keeping up with the Joneses”, Gehl explains:

“The lyrics are about how many people are chasing money and fame, and buy expensive things just to impress other people they don’t even know. To me, life isn’t about how much stuff you can afford but rather about finding real meaning and purpose in what you’re doing every single day of your existence.”
