PTRNS – Mary Jane (2025)
Originally formed in late 2023, PTRNS began as PTR with Patrick Winning (lead guitar), Tom Ward (bass and backing vocals), and Ryan O’Neill (drums) fusing their talents as a trio; however, it was the introduction of Leo Villamor (rhythm guitar) and Nicole Elizabeth (vocals) that really set the sound of the group becoming PTRNS – N for Nicole and, well I’m assuming as L wouldn’t really fit, S for Leo. From the release of their debut single ‘Magnolia’ in 2024, PTRNS quickly earned a reputation for powerful melodies, confident performances, and poetic storytelling. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Mary Jane’.
Following their well-received sophomore single, ‘At Least For Tonight’, PTRNS add another track to their catalogue with ‘Mary Jane’. Produced at Start Together Studios with Michael Bell, the six-piece step toward a heavier, hard-hitting combination of alternative rock and pop-rock bound by old-school emo. A quick listen to ‘At Least For Tonight’ and ‘Magnolia’ reveals a leaning toward artists like Paramore, but while ‘Mary Jane’ retains the reminiscence of Hayley Williams’ mellifluous tones in Nicole Elizabeth’s vocals, the crush of vintage Paramore with My Chemical Romance and The Used bursts through.
An intriguing thrust into a whirlpool of sound, pounding drums, soaring guitars, and a dynamic bass whip past your head with kaleidoscopic flair; a wall of music sneakily hints at tempestuous waves pushing you from pillar to post. The interesting thing is, while these waves could crash, Elizabeth’s voice holds you close like an anchor in the eye of this storm.
Melodically, the song is entrancing and all-consuming, but it is the vocal interplay of Nicole Elizabeth’s soothing and Tom Ward’s aggression that really captures the complexities of its theme. Elizabeth explains: “’Mary Jane’ is a relationship on the brink where love begins to decay and devotion shifts towards someone new. Watching someone you care about walk into a toxic situation.”
In addition to the single, PTRNS released an official music video for ‘Mary Jane’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
