Robyn Alexandra – Toxic Love (2025)
If you’re looking for an expertly crafted pop song, you’d be hard pushed to beat the debut single from Robyn Alexandra titled ‘Toxic Love’. The track focuses on the conflict of whether to follow your head or heart in a relationship. The song is about going for the exciting “bad boy”. “You look no good, won’t treat me right / That’s just my type / I must be fucked up in the head / That’s what I like” – Robyn’s lyrics here explore life’s contradictions when it comes to love.
Robyn Alexandra has been gigging around Liverpool for a while, either on her own or as part of an acoustic duo. She has built up a following with her assured performances. In her own words: “I like to create honest music, no matter how beautiful or ugly that truth may be, so that everyday people can really relate and see themselves in the narrative”.
The song is in the same vein as ‘Ex’s And Oh’s’ by Elle King or even a breezier, poppier version of ‘Back To Black’ by Amy Winehouse. Robyn sounds similar to her contemporaries, such as Olivia Dean, Annemarie and Skye Newman. The track has a gorgeous chorus to bridge transition, and the excellent production by Ben Harper really complements her vocal performance.
Robyn’s clever lyrics give an authentic perspective on the ups and downs of love. They tell of wrestling with the emotion of choosing someone that isn’t right for you, but you just can’t fight that attraction. The hope of letting someone into your life on the off chance that they won’t break your heart – ‘I want toxic love, but it’s too much / I want toxic love, but it’s too rough / On my heart on my little heart.” There is nice bass and keys on the track, and Robyn Alexandra has a strong voice built for catchy pop hooks.
‘Toxic Love’ is accompanied by a classy music video which shows what being in this kind of headspace can do, with Robyn smashing mirrors with perfume bottles! It demonstrates not only a confident singer but also an all-round confident performer. It is obvious that Robyn Alexandra is ready-made for pop stardom.
