Rosetta West – Dora Lee (Gravity) (2025)
Maintaining a “long, unconventional, and fiercely independent underground career…”, rock group Rosetta West have a legion of international fans wandering through their psychedelic, roots blues, and folk-rock realm of music. Founded in the 1990s, Rosetta West has seen the change in musical styles and availability, from cassettes to Spotify, embracing each change, layering each with their unique sound, and reaching out to audiences with passionate zeal. Joining the natural talents of Joseph Demagore (vocals and guitars), Herf Guderian (bass), and Mike Weaver (drums), Rosetta West grabs our attention as we delve into their single, ‘Dora Lee (Gravity)’
Taken off their latest album, Gravity Sessions, ‘Dora Lee (Gravity)’ joins tracks like ‘Deeper Than Magic (Gravity)’ and ‘Suzie (Gravity)’ with a hard-hitting, heavy blues rock flair. Potentially the heaviest of the seven tracks, ‘Dora Lee (Gravity)’ encapsulates the grittiness and raw emotion you feel pumping through the floorboards at an underground live music venue. Immersed in one of those vintage hard rock whirlpools, you are tossed from pillar to post with reckless abandon as the pounding drums, scorching guitars, and bold bass wrap about in kaleidoscopic rage.
I might consider ‘Dora Lee (Gravity)’ to be slightly suffocating, given its way of wriggling into your head, seeping into your pores, and leaving you breathless, lost in an intoxicating belt of music. Yet, an anchor can be heard – or maybe felt – in the simultaneously fiery and soothing song. Along with his soaring guitar, Joseph Demagore’s vocals bring a classic blues-rock flush; however, the power of its rich tone keeps you grounded like a friend holding you close.
Melodically, ‘Dora Lee (Gravity)’ is a rollercoaster well of emotion, but it is the theme that injects further weightiness. The band explain:
“The music is hard blues rock, and the lyrics tell the tale of a man haunted by a brief visitation by a supernatural lover…. The narrator in the role of a military commander, and the visitor in the role of various goddesses such as Ishtar, Hecate, Kali, etc, which hopefully gives food for thought.”
In addition to the single, Rosetta West released an official music video for ‘Dora Lee (Gravity)’. You can view the video below and/or on Rosetta West’s YouTube channel.
