Ross A. – Heartland Girl (2025)
With confident performances, powerful music, and evocative lyricism, singer-songwriter Ross A. is like a modern-day Scheherazade singing her tales and ensnaring your senses. Previously known as Ross Breen, the Irish musician continues to “cultivate his reputation as a respected songwriter”, offering immersive singles to international audiences. This is my introduction to Ross A., so we’re a little late to the party; however, listening to his songs is like hugging an old friend instead of meeting a new acquaintance. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Heartland Girl’.
His first release since 2023’s ‘Be OK’, Ross A. returns to our ears with the track ‘Heartland Girl’. Shifting from the hearty, blues-tinged tones of ‘Be OK’, ‘Heartland Girl’ lingers between the realms of Americana and folk with a slice of indie-rock peeping from the background. Soft, soothing and brimming with gentle wistfulness, ‘Heartland Girl’ is a cinematic world of languid tranquillity. Interestingly, while the track is a mellifluous flood of calm sound, there is a mild hint at delicate vulnerability.
Inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s 1985 novel Love In The Time of Cholera, Ross A. follows two individuals over a multi-year period, “carrying the listener through the decades, gripped in the fates of the song’s lead characters…” – an intimate tale carried by the entwining veils of drums, bass, guitar and piano. Ross A. explains:
“As soon as I started writing the first verse, the words flowed easily, and the story was a straight line I could follow to the end. I like a song you can float away on, walk around in, get lost in… we have an open-ended conclusion here, where the listener can decide the outcome for themselves, depending how they’re feeling.”
In addition to the single, Ross A. will release an official music video for ‘Heartland Girl’ on 16th May, 2025.
