Serotone – Breathe (2025)
Willing to tackle those grittier parts of life that we sometimes want to push down and avoid, Belfast-based three-piece Serotone take you by the hand to navigate murky waters. Earlier this year, the group released their debut single, ‘Fool’s Paradise’, exploring the sense of detachment in a modern-day world and being powerless to change. Their sophomore single, ‘Breathe’, continues on this trajectory. Join us as we jump headfirst into a world of turmoil and tragedy, but also empowerment and hope.
Following the well-received ‘Fool’s Paradise’ – a song that is quickly turning heads across Spotify and international playlists – ‘Breathe’ shifts from a heavier, harder-hitting grunge-driven tone to a softer, more soothing, almost ballad-esque rush of music. Still retaining the grunge-infused sound, along with melodic distortion, Serotone winds a steady drum with bold bass and soaring guitar; however, while that off-kilter distortion offers obscurity and a sort of individuality to each element, ‘Breathe’ is harmonic in its rawness.
For me, ‘Breathe’ has a melancholy feel to it, particularly with the gritty, heartbreaking vocals. It’s a case of life twirling around you with its challenges, while you find yourself trapped in the madness as the vocals keep you in a raw tragedy of inner turmoil, but it doesn’t sink into a mire of doom. A song that is sincere and sentimental, but grabs at the core of confusion and pain to do so, ‘Breathe’ is the deep sigh at the end of that dark tunnel. Serotone’s singer-songwriter Eamon Donnelly explains:
“I wrote this song during a rather hard period of personal struggles. It’s something I feel so uncomfortable having to express to others, which is probably why it needed to be expressed in the form of a song. Everyone in life fights these internal battles, but not everyone talks about it. ‘Breathe’ is, in a strange way, an act of facing the music (quite literally). Recording and performing this track was very therapeutic, and I seriously hope whoever it may reach feels the same level of comfort and self-assurance that they’ll make it through.”
