Silva Lining – One Day At A Time (2025)
Silva Lining Band’s recent single, ‘One Day At A Time’, is a danceable jazz fusion tune about warring lovers, but the lyrics and party vibe give space for social awakening. The way lead singer Tiago Silva stretches the line “one love”, like a call to action, over relaxing samba guitar and a mix of enticing percussion and rock drumming. It may feel bright and positive, but Silva goes elsewhere. He continues with: ”…may save you/One love may break you”. The simplicity and the duality make the line relatable. He opens up a nuanced story of a relationship inspired by vulnerability while bringing attention to the failure of philosophies around unity. Silva asks, how do we make sense of our lives when the phrases on pillows and mugs and of saintly revolutionaries don’t match our reality?
When Pedro Azevedo’s trumpet and Rui Gonçalves’ trombone come together, ramping up the passion with rallying melodies, you’re invited to dance. But within the blares and samba rhythms, when Tiago Silva swings in with the hook, backed by the elegant Nuno Silva, the harmonies create a communal feeling of angst. Together, they let us know, “I’ve been lied to/And I’ve been holding on”, with the R&B style of emphasis on the lines about the lies and holding on. The two family members focus on emotion over stacking vocals to drive home the bewilderment. Tiago Silva’s voice is imperfect, but that’s good here. His personality comes through in his limited range, and he sounds like one of us.
The laid-back feel continues throughout. The simple composition allows Tiago’s yearning and raw performance to give the band an original sound over this timeless music. By the breakdown, the core rhythm allows for Miguel Mascarenhas’ electric guitar solo to express but not wander, and for Azevedo to roar in with rapid playing to deepen the song’s searching energy. The contemplation continues, with the lines, “Making love is the cure/Making love is the lure.” This is about romance, but it is also about our collective future. What should have saved us has not. The cure? Untangle the mess through uninhibited expression and find your own way.
