Soda Cracker Jesus – Drug My Soul (2021)

The brainchild of veteran musician Regan Lane, Soda Cracker Jesus is a melting pot of sounds and styles. In previous years, the US-based singer-songwriter worked with punk band Baby Knockers, 80’s rockers Strypes, co-wrote the theme song for the radio show True Fidelity and was even the creator/host of TV show Strangely Alright TV. At the moment, in addition to his solo project Soca Cracker Jesus, Lane is the frontman for the group Strangely Alright sharing some psychedelic rock with the masses. It’s a pretty busy repertoire, don’t you think?

Featured on websites like Eclectic Music Lover, Mango Rave, Less Than 1000 Followers, The New Music Food Truck and JPGChief (to name a few), Lane is reaching out to audiences across the globe with his musical endeavour. Following his well-received debut single ‘My Anthem’ (read our review here), Soda Cracker Jesus releases his new track ‘Drug My Soul’.

The easiest way to describe ‘Drug My Soul’ is three minutes of rock-induced trippiness. Aptly named, SCJ’s latest single blends indie-rock, psych-rock and grunge into wave after wave of ethereal music. I’m not saying the otherworldliness is a soft, haunting sound, but rather a powerful blast in the face. Combining dynamic guitars with pounding drums, SCJ plunges you into a whirlpool of music with a strong hazy ambience. As I say, though, the haziness is not calming but a forceful thrust.

The instrumentation does have a harmonic flow but Lane’s vocals are the anchor in the tune. It is not an element to keep you grounded but carries you in the melody without losing your way. Brash, bold and dark, the vocals have a twinge of indie-rock to them; however, one cannot deny the distinct sound of Soda Cracker Jesus. Following his upbeat track ‘My Anthem’, SCJ showcases a transition from contemporary to old-school styles with a unique flair.

In addition to his single, Soda Cracker Jesus released an official music video for ‘Drug My Soul’. Please note, the video contains lighting effects that can cause seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Watch at your own discretion.
