teethin – GREED BETWEEN THE LINES (2025)
If you require a shot of adrenaline or a release of dopamine, then look no further than the debut EP from electro punk act teethin. It is an intense snapshot of a disgruntled society set to pulsating drum and bass beats. They label themselves as “the most unhinged band to ever come out of Wales”, and I wouldn’t want to argue with them. teethin draws upon a range of influences, including 80s punk, the 90s rave scene and noughties grime. They want to use their music as a tool to speak out about how the establishment treats the underrepresented and the overlooked. GREED BETWEEN THE LINES is only 16 minutes long, but you come away feeling like you’ve had a unique listening experience.
The EP starts with ‘THROWIN SHAPES’, which opens with a narration over an electronic beat. It quickly explodes into earth-shattering drum and bass. It’s clear that this is a statement about the state of the country, and how the working class fights amongst themselves while people in power laugh at them from on high – “Words whispered down to all ere on this stupid patch of land /But my God do they defend it /With their teeth and lives no less”. This is an alternative anthem for the frustrated and ignored. The line “We all sing tho, innit” details how we’re just meant to crack on with things and not speak out. Maybe the song we’re all singing is ‘Sweet Caroline’?!
The tempo doesn’t drop with ‘LARA SCOFFED’, which has random musings over a fierce beat. This is another anti-establishment number: ‘Fucking politics /don’t even care me /don’t even vote me’. The track has a lot of reverb and morphs into thrashing guitars and pounding drums. teethin’s use of distortion is immense. As the track progresses, the sound becomes bigger and could lend itself to a movie.
The next track, ‘DUD’, is one which has already had some exposure, as it made the BBC Introducing playlist on 6 Music. It is an angry track which has a pulsating bassline and chugging guitars. This is another track on this release where you can hear the influence from The Prodigy. Vocalist James Minas has a great passion and energy in his delivery. His Welsh twang really shines through in his vocals. The lyrics speak about alienation and not being able to fit in.
Whether it be The Who or Limp Bizkit, ‘MY GENERATION’ has been used over the decades to chronicle the state of the youth of today. teethin’s take on this is evaluating the feeling of the current generation having no clear voice or movement in music like those decades past. It is more melodic than the other tracks and has powerful synths with influences from Linkin Park to New Order. The closer to the relentless GREED BETWEEN THE LINES sounds like it could’ve been from one of those late-90s Bowie albums.’BROKE THE LIGHT’ has a dense sound and production, with a great tempo and awesome energy.
teethin is a band with something to say, and they have a contagious energy about them. They are currently on a five-date UK tour, and I imagine their live shows to be something else! The kids are alright.
