The Exact Same Kid – empty (2025)
On his Spotify biography, The Exact Same Kid describes himself as “groovy indie-rock to help you stop thinking about your problems and start thinking about mine” – quite cheeky, don’t you think? Ignore our problems to consider his; then again, it might not be too bad an idea. The fact is, so aptly named, The Exact Same Kid (also known as Alex Conroy) is the same as you, the same as me, and we all have the same problems, so why not use the same music to explore and overcome them? Sound good? Good. Join me as I delve into The Exact Same Kid’s latest single, ‘empty’.
Following his single ‘like a child’, The Exact Same Kid releases the indie-rock-filled single ‘empty’. Produced at Nutshed Studio in Clara Co. Offaly, with long-time collaborator Aidan Cunningham, ‘empty’ is a bold concoction of crashing drums and dynamic guitars that seem to suck you in like a person suddenly grabbing you without any warning. The music twirls about in a sonic hurricane, but within the smash of sound and flurry of emotion, ‘empty’ also brims with solace, comfort, and a guiding hand within the storm.
While the track is named ‘empty’ and The Exact Same Kid sings lyrics like “you’re empty, I am too”, the single is by no means a vacuous void. Lyrically, it explores themes of loss, monotony, and that dark pool you fall into when you ponder on your faded youth and being alone in a world of burnout, rat race, mundanity, and that exhausting despair of merely “…going through the motions of life”. Yet, while this seems terribly dreary and miserable, The Exact Same Kid offers a light of hope, liberation, empowerment and joy with a toe-tapping, sigh-of-relief melody. It’s a song of “…feeling bored or tired or isolated or stuck on a loop”, but also being the open invitation where you find that other person who feels lonely and “collectively screwed”.
