Tonneau – In My Defense (2025)

Exploring and celebrating life in its entirety, from the depths of tragedy to the gleeful laughs of triumph, Dutch trio Tonneau blend poignant themes with evocative tunes without ever adhering to a particular style, category or label. In their previous single, ‘Crush on You’, Ton van Dijk’s vocals and guitars danced across the edge of indie-folk, while Alies van der Hoeven shimmered on the strings, and Jan van der Hoeven’s lingered with pulsating drums. Adhering to their constantly changing sound, where each melody differs from the next, Tonneau share their most recent single, ‘In My Defense’.

While many of Tonneau’s singles set you drift in a swirling rush of kaleidoscopic sound, ‘In My Defense’ is softer, simpler, and somewhat stripped-back in its acoustic execution. A minimalist pairing of barebones vocals, gliding violin and steady guitar, the single holds a profound sense of reflection. Within the wistful breath of music – including the hushed backing vocals – a bold sentimentality and assurance is washing across quiet confusion. Tonneau explains:

“… an intimate reflection on pressure, love, and the moments where resistance quietly turns into rejoice… each verse carries traces of different times and moods – the ambition of work, the tension of relationships, the quiet surprise of acceptance. It’s not a song of certainty, but one of hesitant rejoicing.”

‘In My Defense’ is a song years in the making, as van Dijk explains: “I often got stuck. The melody or words would circle around for months, sometimes years, before they finally landed.” – what we hear now is the soothing caress of a song that is personal and intimate, reading like a page of a diary. For me, it is soothing and calm – a caress of the soul on a busy yet mundane day. For some strange reason, hearing the track with van Dijk’s smooth vocals calms everything, whispers a sense of tranquillity and leaves you feeling that little bit better.
