Track of the Day: Andi Jane – Cicada Song (2025)
Entwining various musical styles from New Orleans jazz and honky-tonk to bluegrass and old-school country, singer-songwriter Andi Jane is the fascinating lady performing on stage whose songs stick with you despite you never having heard her before. Brimming with cheekiness, her intoxicating performance makes Andi Jane the artist you didn’t know you needed in your life… and that’s just her dash of onstage charm. From her 2023 single ‘Hide The Key’ to 2024’s ‘Charlotte’s Web’, her music has reached the masses with an off-kilter lilt and obscurity – at least that’s the discography I found on Spotify. Join me as we delve into her latest single, ‘Cicada Song’.
Following her well-received 2024 single ‘Charlotte’s Web’, the US-based Jane saunters into 2025 with ‘Cicada Song’. Produced by Jane, with mixing and mastering by Eli Meltzer, the new single reminds me of The Dresden Dolls with Amanda Palmer’s eccentricity; however, Jane’s rich vocals are warmer, bolder, and somewhat more put together (for lack of a better word). It’s a voice that can calm a room, soothe your soul, and kind of caress you in its clarity.
In its sophisticated elegance, Andi Jane’s voice can draw you in without hesitation or effort, but ‘Cicada Song’ is more than just her vocals. Creating a kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry of Jane’s piano, Andrew Lambie’s guitar, Seth Darby’s upright bass, and Zach Bunton’s fiddle, the track brims with shimmering melodic colours. A tint of cabaret slices with some neo-folk darkness, but there is still empowering lightness in the track. Jane explains:
“This is a song about emerging from the dirt, where your beauty was hidden, and your talents suppressed. It’s about shedding your old skin, taking flight, and not being afraid to make noise… or maybe it’s just a song about cicadas.”
‘Cicada Song’ is an earworm in itself, but why not treat yourself to Andi Jane’s intriguing live session? Released on her official YouTube channel, Jane and the Cabaret String Band perform ‘Cicada Song’ in her “living room sessions”. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube.
