Track of the Day: Kate Prendergast – Retold Tale (2025)

I come across numerous artists daily, and often many get lost in the mire of music; however, some stand out, not demanding attention but turning my eye and ear so I won’t ignore or forget them. Kate Prendergast is one. Still a teenager, the young singer-songwriter clutches at your heart with her innocence, but don’t be fooled, amidst this youthfulness lies sophistication, maturity, honesty, and an almost advice-giving narrative typically heard from seasoned artists. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Retold Tale’.

Following her well-received singles ‘Ignition’ and ‘Lavender Country’, Prendergast joins producer Declan Legge in ‘Retold Tale’. Unlike the seemingly weightier rush of ‘Ignition’ that kicked up an, um, fuller, for lack of a better word, arrangement in its high-spirited nature, ‘Retold Tale’ takes things down a notch. The combination of bold drums, dynamic guitar, and bass emerges in a swell of sound and emotion; however, it appears calmer, gentler and smoother with greater intimacy.

Clinging to a folk-tinged tone, ‘Retold Tale’ retains the charm of vintage folk, but clips it with indie-folk sentiments. As if travelling along a bare sonic path in what might seem tiresome exhaustion, ‘Retold Tale’ lilts toward the emptier and more difficult side of things; however, while the flecks of downside exist, the song is by no means depressing – it is empowering, hopeful and filled with acceptance. Prendergast’s warm vocals act like an anchor and guiding force, holding you close as you travel along the dusty road.

While her melodies already brim with maturity, Prendergast’s lyricism proves her old soul nature. Tapping into a personal narrative, but also acting like a sage offering solace and support, she explores the journey of being, well, a person. She explains:

“’Retold Tale’… explores the challenges and experiences that countless young artists go through while trying to make a name for themselves in the worlds of music and everyday life.”
