Track of the Day: MayKay – Busted (2025)

In our interview with singer-songwriter MayKay, she shared that getting into music wasn’t a pursuit of some musical journey, but more an excuse not to stay in college. She shared: “I didn’t really MEAN to pursue a career. About 20 years ago, my friend Jamie and I really wanted an excuse not to stay in college because we both had picked courses that we hated. We just wanted to watch wrestling and listen to music, so we started a band called Fight Like Apes…” Well, Fight Like Apes went on the road, they won hearts and burst onto the Irish and international music scene. Subsequently, MayKay became a member of the electro band, Le Galaxie, but it is her solo project that we’re stepping into today.

Taken off her self-titled debut album, ‘Busted’ is one track in a series of “short, sleazy stories carrying a razor-sharp message.” With a brush of cheekiness and a silky attitude that makes you pay attention while enjoying a witty narrative, the new album is a stripped-back version of being honest and staying true to yourself in a bit of a crazy reality. When speaking about the album, MayKay explains:

“Be honest with yourselves and, more importantly, with your boys. Talk to you boys. Please. People with bad intentions will always try to complicate the issue of consent, but it’s not complicated. Do you want women to trust you or not?”

Sitting between ‘Good Wife’ and ‘Dating Shit’, ‘Busted’ is one of the most brutally honest tracks on MayKay. Co-produced with Ian McFarlane, it oscillates between a pounding beat and a sonic whirlpool with kaleidoscopic sound washing over your head. I might describe ‘Busted’ as a version of indie-pop, but it has a heavier, rock-tinged flair. Like a fist-pumping anthem where you see people standing with defiant looks on their faces, to a mad twirl of rambunctious recklessness where you scream out loud until your throat hurts and your lungs burn.

Frenzied and chaotic, but also with a stoic sense of sincerity and vulnerable concern, MayKay unpicks the complexity of relationships in a challenging world. I urge everyone to listen to ‘Busted’ and enjoy the rest of MayKay; trust me, it’s a mindful treat.
