Track of the Day: Orla Monelle – Romanticise (2025)
At age 17, singer-songwriter Orla Monelle took a huge step to begin her musical journey: she left her native Belgium and moved to Ireland. She began turning heads with her 2020 single, ‘Close To Me’, and her hold on audiences became stronger as years passed with 2023’s ‘Timing’, 2024’s ‘Powerless’, and now her most recent release, ‘Romanticise’. With enthusiastic performances and confident melodies, the Dublin-based singer-songwriter has featured in notable publications, earned Spotify playlist additions, had airtime on international radio stations, and continues to win hearts at festivals and live music venues. This is our introduction to Monelle, so join us as we dive headfirst into ‘Romanticise’.
Following her single ‘Powerless’, Monelle saunters into 2025 with ‘Romanticise’. Taken from her upcoming debut EP, the single solidifies her blend of contemporary R&B with pop, but has more of a lilt toward soulful R&B tones. Unlike ‘Powerless’, which offers a haunting flow of pop music, the new track is more sophisticated, sassy and flutters with sensuality that comes from comfort, confidence, and pure acceptance of oneself.
Produced by Alex O’Keefe, ‘Romanticise’ is not a song that immerses you in its soulful melody; rather, it unravels the power of independence, resilience and total self-acceptance with Monelle’s intimate narrative. Crashing drums and hard-hitting guitars leap from the tune, but it is the rich, warm vocals that drive ‘Romanticise’ with individuality and strength.
“I was feeling lonely at the time of writing this song. I started reflecting on a time when I was alone but not lonely. In summer 2022, I spent a month in London, exploring the city, going to gigs by myself and putting myself out there to meet new people. I felt such freedom and confidence in anonymity. I wanted to write ‘Romanticise’ to remind myself of that feeling of empowerment and find a way to get back to it.” – Orla Monelle on ‘Romanticise’
Sentimental, introspective, and beautifully crafted, ‘Romanticise’ is one of those tracks that hit you between the eyes, and you can only marvel at Monelle’s bold liberation. With the promise of an upcoming EP, I cannot wait for more from Orla Monelle.
In addition to the single, Orla Monelle released a music video for ‘Romanticise’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel.
