Track of the Day: Red Skies Dawning – Shipwrecked (2025)

The evolution of US-based group Red Skies Mourning – an act we’ve reviewed a few times – we are now presented with its next era: Red Skies Dawning. With his background in grunge, pop and alternative music, frontman Chris Aleshire returns to his 90s/early 2000s rock roots, joined by producer Chris Dawson, and musicians Laulis, Trujillo, and Carpenter. The new stage solidifies a “raw energy and refined musicality”. Join us as we see the butterfly emerge from its cocoon with their debut single, ‘Shipwrecked’.

Beginning as an emotional alternative pop anthem, ‘Shipwrecked’ existed before this hard rock offering. Aleshire’s alt-pop track was tipped and turned about by Dawson, reimagined with grit, grunge, and a hard hit in the face blast of raw rock music. A blasting cacophony of crashing drums, a heavy bass and scorching guitars, ‘Shipwrecked’ tosses you into a kaleidoscopic hurricane from the outset. Music whips past as you spin about faster and faster in the hard rock insanity; however, as much as the music is a bit of a punch in the gut, there is a slip of soothing slicing through with silvery brightness in Aleshire’s rugged vocals.

One aspect I find particularly intriguing is not only the calm within the chaos, but the strength of the vocals, both woven into the track and dominating it. Fist-pumping, heart-thumping, and a wild ride, ‘Shipwrecked’ conjures up the ferocity of heading down with the ship. Yet, it is not a desperate rapture of tragedy; rather, it is a song of empowerment, strength and raw resilience. Aleshire explains:

“The story behind ‘Shipwrecked’ is rooted in the themes of loss, resilience, and rebirth. At its core, the song is a metaphor for being emotionally and mentally “wrecked” after investing yourself into a relationship, a dream or even a phase of life that ultimately collapses. Much like being stranded at sea after a ship goes down, it captures that moment of desperation – fighting to stay afloat – while realising that the wreckage can also become the foundation for something new…”
