Vanda – Sunday Shroom (2025)

Bursting onto the music scene with a cheeky grin, singer-songwriter Vanda set herself as one of the more exciting acts to hit the US pop world with her album, Sober In Another Life. Skip ahead a couple of years, and the critical acclaim continues to earn Vanda an international following. With powerful vocals, weighty emotion, and moving melodies, her singles resonate with audiences as an exposition of the grittier areas of life while simultaneously offering solace with each chord. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Sunday Shroom’.

Following her well-received 2024 singles ‘i don’t swim’ and ‘Stranger’, ‘Sunday Shroom’ is Vanda’s multi-coloured saunter into 2025. Recorded and produced with Joel Woods, the track shifts from the dreamy, somewhat ethereal soundscape of ‘i don’t swim’ to a heavier blend of pop and indie-pop with a rock-tinged flair. Interestingly, while the combination of guitars, keyboards, and shimmering synths tip their hat at Tame Impala, the vocals and wistful soundscape lilts to Taylor Swift.

Twirling in a harmonic symphony, the arrangement binds each instrument with kaleidoscopic charm; however, it is Vanda’s vocals that seem to up the ante in ‘Sunday Shroom’. As if wandering through a hazy sonic forest, the sensation is light-hearted and whimsical with Vanda guiding you. Yet, as much as there is a languid gentleness to ‘Sunday Shroom’, its tranquillity oscillates between dreamy lightness and vulnerable melancholy. Vanda explains:

“It’s about that quiet, trippy headspace where you’re not sure if you’re dreaming or just remembering something really deeply. The title kind of says it all – it’s a Sunday vibe, but with this emotional distortion, like you’re still processing the night before… ‘Sunday Shroom’ feels like floating through a lucid dream… like coming down from something you’re not ready to let go of.”

Overall, ‘Sunday Shroom’ is infectious, toe-tapping, and something to bring you a breath of fresh air at the end of a busy day, but I believe Vanda has so much more to give and would love to hear her explore various genres, not merely varieties of pop. While I happily keep her discography on repeat, I am eager to see if she steps into funk, jazz or soul in the future.
