Vicious Clay – sand lake (2025)
Borne of the need to express oneself through music, and I’m talking complete expression, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Vinny Silva created Vicious Clay as the old friend to hold your hand and share a cup of tea with before a roaring fire. Originally founded in 2018 as a solo project, the already accomplished Silva took life experiences (good and bad) and poured them into moving melodies. From then on, Vicious Clay has grown and evolved into a powerful quartet using Silva’s creative vision as their base while sauntering through the realms of rock, blues, soul, grunge, and indie – to name just a few genres. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘sand lake’.
Re-emerging on the music scene – or at least in the streaming world – ‘sand lake’ follows 2025’s ‘dark’ as an evolution of Vicious Clay. While the track might appear to be just over three minutes of music, there is far more than meets the eye with ‘sand lake’ from its formation to the melody. A true labour of love, the single has been “in the works” for over 15 years ago spanning from a drum kit in 2010 as Silva rehearsed for a cover band to finalising the lyrics between 2022 and 2024; now, it’s available to hear in all its glory as a single.
Co-produced with long-time collaborator and friend Apoena Frota at the iconic Studio G in Williamsburg, ‘sand lake’ builds an indie-rock tone atop a classic rock beat. The combination of driving drums, a bold bass, and rock-infused guitar is harmonic and rhythmic; however, there appears to be a sense of individuality as each instrument has its moment in the spotlight while retaining togetherness. Silva’s slightly raspy vocals bring warmth and joy, while also giving ‘sand lake’ a slip of vulnerability and raw innocence.
A feel-good track from beginning to end, listeners will find themselves captivated in the flow of sincere, sentimental and heart-warming music. As a song expressing the thrill of new love – be it a new adventure, new romance, or new experience – ‘sand lake’ is a celebration of life, love and everything beautiful in this world.
