Wattmore – It’s Called Love… It’s Called The Blues (ft Allan Caswell) (2026)
With strong melodies, honest lyrics, infuriatingly infectious guitars, lived-in weightiness, dry humour, eye rolls, and gritty energy, brothers Kai and Aiden Boak ooze classic country music with rock-tinged edges as Wattmore. In 2024, the Australian duo splashed onto the music scene with mischief, sarcasm, and “emotional sucker punches” that can leave you gasping for breath but enjoying the ride. Their debut single, ‘Circus Life’, was an obscure layer of Americana and alternative rock, while the 2025 single ‘Canadian Whiskey’ washed across audiences with a slick bluegrass flavour. Today, we take another step into the Wattmore world with their most recent release, ‘It’s Called Love… It’s Called The Blues’.
Produced with long-time collaborator Lindsay Waddington, and featuring Australian country music legend Allan Caswell, ‘It’s Called Love… It’s Called The Blues’ sits comfortably between blues and country with a rich, warm, lived-in vibe travelling along the melody. Built on a bold bassline, thumping drum, clipped percussion and a scorching guitar, ‘It’s Called Love… It’s Called The Blues’ is a profound thud with blues-rock meets country stylings. Saying it’s heavy is an understatement, as this pulsing push of rock stomps in front of you with a raised eyebrow, pensive face, and a hard-hitting attitude that makes them shine bright without any flares or fancies.
Simplistic in one sense, with guitars plodding along at a steady pace, ‘It’s Called Love… It’s Called The Blues’ is nothing overpowering or overwhelming at its core; however, in the same breath, there is an imposing, over-arching, hit you between the eyes style. Caswell’s spoken word execution is affronting in the best way – like someone telling you how things are, and you don’t even question it.
Unafraid to strip life experiences bare and spill raw honesty on the floor, ‘It’s Called Love… It’s Called The Blues’ tells the truth about being in love. Wattmore explain: “This song digs into the part of love nobody warns you about – the quiet fallout after the spark fades. No drama, no cliches, just the truth delivered with twang, attitude and real instruments…” In my opinion, it’s about time someone told the brutal truth of love after butterflies and sunshine. I highly recommend this song and am eager to hear more from Wattmore.
