Wayne Madder – First Time I Met You (2022)

Merging elements of jazz, blues, soul, folk and rock into his unique sound, Wayne Madder is one of those artists that touch your heart and ensnares the senses. This is my introduction to Wayne Madder, but people have been singing his praises since his debut release in 2021. Featured on various podcasts, radio stations and playlists, Madder is reaching audiences far beyond his Canadian borders. Moreover, he was a semi-finalist at the International Songwriting Competition, and his album Unconditional won the Oshawa Music Awards. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘First Time I Met You’.

As a romantic person (sometimes naively so), I believe in the concept of love at first sight – and this is what ‘First Time I Met You’ is all about. Following his single ‘Not Going To Cry’, Madder adopts a blues sound in the new track ‘First Time I Met You’. A slight hint of rock can be heard in the outstanding guitars bringing out an 80s guitar-picking style; however, there is still a contemporary sound in the new ballad.

One thing I really love about Wayne Madder’s new song is the overwhelming effect of the simplistic arrangement. It’s not acoustic, but the minimalist quality we often hear in acoustic songs shines through in ‘First Time I Met You’. When I began listening to the track, I immediately thought Madder is a mash of Eric Clapton and BB King – then the song continued, and I realised he is in a class of his own.

As charming as the melody is, it is the vocal execution of the poetic lyricism that really made me go, “aww, that’s so lovely”. Sweet and sincere vocals perfectly deliver the tale of meeting your special someone and celebrating the joyful experience.

Sincere, sentimental, genuine and kind, Wayne Madder wins your heart in ‘First Time I Met You’.
