Wendy DuMond – Pretty Penny (2025)
Known for her “evocative storytelling and versatile musical style…”, singer-songwriter Wendy DuMond weaves compelling tales into the complex experiences of women in today’s society. From betrayal and tragedy to self-worth and empowerment, the US-based musician delicately unpicks and captures the core of humanity in country-inspired songs. Performing as a member of Blackfoot Daisy and a solo artist, under the stage-name Bog Witch, she showcases her innovativeness and originality as part of a group and individually; today, we take a gander at her solo work. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Pretty Penny’.
Following her 2025 singles ‘Lord Calvert’ and ‘Moon Is Winking’, ‘Pretty Penny’ is, well, in a word: dark. Joined by Tom Wolf on mandolin and Don Sechelski on acoustic guitar and bass, the single has a simplistic charm rooted in vintage country music; however, there is an obscurity that transcends the flowing melody.
A harmonic weave of DuMond’s percussion and guitar with Wolf’s mandolin and Sechelski’s bass and guitar, the arrangement is sophisticated and elegant, but there’s something there that shimmers with haunting. A sense of barebones sparseness with a peek of kaleidoscopic confidence, the single is complex; emotions ranging from skin-chilling to strange comfort and heartfelt tenderness ooze from the symphony.
Melodically, ‘Pretty Penny’ is weighty in its oscillation from bright highs to dark lows; however, it is the lyrical take on the concept that maintains a sense of emotional clarity. A bittersweet conversation between females, ‘Pretty Penny’ explores betrayal, beauty, self-worth and the “…central tension – what we give up, what we gain, and what we carry.” Executed with DuMond’s soothing and rich, but sharp and cold vocals, this track is not one to forget.
In addition to the single, Wendy DuMond released an official music video for ‘Pretty Penny’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel.
