Winterland – I Don’t Know (2025)
Exploring the current state of the world, German trio Winterland are back with a new single from their album Life’s What You Make It. ‘I Don’t Know’ homes in on the uncertainty we all share when trying to make sense of the ever-growing complexity of life, both on a personal and global scale.
The siren that rings out at the beginning, coupled with a quintessential rock beat on the drums, sets the tone for the entire song. Following this up with the line, “It’s such a crazy world we live in”, could not have been more perfect to solidify what the message lead singer Stephan Hugo was trying to convey when writing it. From then on, this riff-driven track grabs your attention instantly and commands it from start to finish. With all the characteristics of any great rock song, ‘I Don’t Know’ has the right level of raw aggression with melodic artistry.
I would recommend this to any fan of the band Jane’s Addiction. In my opinion, not many people have a voice with gravitas to pull off such a sound other than Perry Farrell, but Stefan Hugo is definitely an exception to the rule. He really makes the track his own by cutting through the fantastic tracks laid down by Markus Pfeffer (guitars and keys) and Bernd Schreiber (bass). As the song progresses, the talent of Pfeffer is there for all to hear with a tantalising guitar solo.
One thing is abundantly clear when listening to ‘I Don’t Know’ – a sound like this could only come from a group who knows each other inside out, which means I was not surprised to learn that Hugo and Pfeffer have been great friends for over 30 years. Like I said earlier, this is a track that does not let up and really does just leave you wanting more, so I’ll be eager to listen to more on their latest album, Life’s What You Make It.
In addition to the single, Winterland released an official music video for ‘I Don’t Know’. You can view it below and/or on their YouTube channel.
