YDAVID – No Maybes (2025)

Who knew Slovenia would give us one of the most interesting electro-disco tracks of the year? That’s exactly what YDAVID delivers with ‘No Maybes’. This release is bold, a little surreal and ridiculously catchy. From the first few seconds, the groove locks in: funky basslines, a pulsing beat, and that shimmering retro vibe that makes you want to move. Then the chorus hits, and good luck getting it out of your head.

What makes ‘No Maybes’ extra special is that it’s YDAVID’s first time stepping up to the mic. After years behind the drums and the mixing desk, he’s finally front and centre, and honestly, it suits him. His vocals have this slightly raw, honest tone that fits perfectly with the song’s theme of risk and self-discovery. You can really hear the “rip off the band-aid” energy he mentioned, that mix of excitement and vulnerability that comes with trying something new.

The production is full of detail, but never overdone. You can tell YDAVID’s background as a drummer and producer shapes the way everything fits together. Indeed, every beat, every synth, every small pause feels intentional. The addition of Jani Hace on bass is the perfect touch too, giving the track a warm, funk-driven undercurrent that keeps it (and us, listeners) moving.

And then there’s the music video, or I should say a full-on fever dream that somehow makes total sense in YDAVID’s world. It’s filled with surreal AI-generated scenes: cats turning into smoke, then into dogs, a donkey, then a monkey, and who knows what else after that. It’s bizarre, funny and a little hypnotic. The kind of visual you can’t look away from, even if it doesn’t make any sense in your mind. It perfectly mirrors the song’s “post-truth” mood, where everything feels familiar but slightly off, like reality seen through a disco ball.

Overall, ‘No Maybes’ stands out because it sounds alive. That energy comes through in every layer. It’s disco, it’s experimental, it’s weirdly hopeful, and it’s proof that stepping out of your comfort zone can pay off in the best way. Keep on dreaming, indeed.
