9 o’clock Nasty – Sonic (2025)

Genre-diverse; genre-bending; genre-breaking; genre-confusion – all describing the entirely undefinable 9 o’clock Nasty. Stomping toward, sauntering across, and mutilating realms of punk, hip-hop, disco, alternative rock, rap, and anything else they might consider at that moment, the UK-based trio appeals to audiences of all ages, preferences, and opinions. Today, we take a look, listen and walk into the group’s most recent single, ‘Sonic’.

Following the well-received singles, ‘Game Fit’ and ‘Love In The Circle’, Pete Brock (vocals and guitar), Ted Pepper (bass and vocals), and Sydd Spudd (drums) offer us another taster of their upcoming album, Chaos, with ‘Sonic’. For me, and this might seem rather odd, 9 o’clock Nasty retains the whisper of relentless, rambunctious attitudes heard in previous material; however, ‘Sonic’ seems not to be chaotic, but rather an obscure sincerity in its barebones starkness. It’s not abrasive or brash, nor frenzied and urgent. Instead, the sparse combination of drums, bass and guitar clips with an eclectic blend of understanding, solace and empowerment in a mundane, often-stagnating society.

“Normal people. They leave their house every morning and turn in the same direction. They follow the same footsteps. This is the cautionary tale of the human that turned in the other direction and ran away with the wolves. Humdrum life can never prepare you to soar with the gulls, screeching over the concrete of the numb city…” – 9 o’clock Nasty on ‘Sonic’

Steady and anchored, Spudd’s drums pulsate like a heartbeat you can hold onto. The bass runs along with a smile, and the vocals dance about the edges, allowing you to breathe, twirl, and lose yourself in music. In certain cases, the punk sheen of 9 o’clock Nasty rips the band-aid from an oozing wound. Today, we have the salve to soothe the pain with a stinging tingle; shining freedom, relief and liberation within the subduing melee of discontent.
