Chris St. John – A Flower Blooms (2025)
We were introduced to singer-songwriter Chris St. John a couple of years ago with his album, The Sinner and The Saint – an album that brought the US-based musician critical acclaim and international recognition. Even before the 2023 album, St. John earned numerous chart-topping releases, a Grammy award nomination, and is noted as a forerunner in the Americana music world. Join us as we take another step into St. John’s well-received discography with the single, ‘A Flower Blooms’.
The opening track from his most recent album, Never Where I Am, ‘A Flower Blooms’ introduces audiences to an immersive ten-track sonic swoop sauntering through various slicks of folk, Americana, country and rock. An album exploring life in its grit and glory, St. John celebrates the themes of love, loss and rediscovery in Never Where I Am’s soulful tapestry of kaleidoscopic music.
Joined by a group of established session artists – Michael Spriggs (acoustic guitar), Molly Cherryholmes (fiddle and backing vocals), Pat Bergeson (electric guitar and harmonica), Dane Bryant (piano and keyboards), Alison Prestwood (bass guitar), Steve Brewster (drums and percussion), and Steve Hinson (pedal steel guitar), Never Where I Am is a sophisticated, mature, elegant rush of music bound with powerful passion. ‘A Flower Blooms’ acts as a doorway to the raw emotion, poetic lyricism and evocative melodies found on Never Where I Am.
Produced by Michael Spriggs, ‘A Flower Blooms’ is a four-minute ballad brimming with the joyful innocence of yesteryear’s folk style, melded with a jangle-pop vibe. Yet, as much as the single has you tapping your toes and twirling about with a grin on your face, a trip of indie-rock flutters along in the soaring guitars and bold bass. For me, the interspersed acoustic piano plays a large role in the happiness and upbeat twinkling of ‘A Flower Blooms’ – bound by Chris St. John’s dulcet vocals pulling you close with a big bear hug.
Melodically, the harmonic symphony of percussion, guitars, piano, and drums lays a kaleidoscopic path of twinkling happiness, and this so perfectly aligns with the empowering theme of ‘A Flower Blooms’. Celebrating how sad moments can become positive learning curves, St. John brings joy from sadness in the new single.
