June – Up (2025)

Brimming with diversity, singer-songwriter June traverses realms of pop, indie, and folk, all with an alternative flair glittering on her coattails. Classically trained as a pianist and currently studying the guitar, the Irish musician finds a lingering between structure and improvisation in her music, all striking a melodic and emotional core. This is my introduction to June, but she is already turning heads beyond her Irish borders, quietly stepping to the UK with her intriguing sound, performing at The Panache Music Festival in Liverpool. While currently planning her debut album, June is focusing on building momentum on the Irish music scene with several singles. Today we take a listen to her most recent release, ‘Up’.

Finding the line between modern pop, electronic pop, and indie-folk, June weaves all aspects into an emotional two minutes of music. At the forefront, ‘Up’ is bouncy and soothing with a gentle pop tone. The bold drum beats pulsating in the background act like a heartbeat, punching a lively kick into the track. Synths shimmer across, bringing a hazy quality to the song, offering a veil of sorts; however, June’s delicate falsetto pierces the shade with glistening light and overwhelming obscurity.

For me, the various instruments offer a typical pop quality, not necessarily being the stars of the show. For me, it is June’s vocals, the composition and the arrangement that stand out. Driven by an acoustic piano, pinched by shades of modern pop, ‘Up’ straddles the line between classical and contemporary. Not necessarily orchestral, but within the realms of its arrangement, ‘Up’ is symphonic and harmonic; yet raw vulnerability exudes from June’s distinctive voice.

Upbeat, soothing, confident and intimate, ‘Up’ is the track to take you higher with its emotionally melodic sound while touching your heart with vulnerable fragility. Interestingly, it is this exact way of lifting your spirits, but also keeping things grounded which aligns with the theme – “… a contrasting atmosphere where a listener can sweep themselves into the ups and downs of a relationship… a rising feeling that allows… to feel both hopeful and bleak.”
