Ava Valianti – Buttercups (2025)
Described as the voice of her generation, singer-songwriter Ava Valianti is one of the more intriguing acts showing us what contemporary musicians really have to offer. Despite being an emerging artist, Valianti is quickly climbing the music industry ladder, turning heads far beyond her US borders, earning nominations at the New England Music Awards and runner-up honours at the International Acoustic Music Awards, delivering powerful and confident performances, and building a following that transcends generations with timeless themes and sounds. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Buttercups’.
Following the well-received tracks ‘Laugh Track’ and ‘Distant’, Ava Valianti shifts from the pop-infused sounds of ‘Distant’ to a stronger folk-inspired sound in ‘Buttercups’. Interestingly, while the opening soothing of the track leans toward old-school folk, the arrangement soon progresses to a crescendo of indie-pop entwined within the colourful blush of retro folk. With rollercoaster flair, Valianti takes us from soft, gentle, laid-back acoustic guitar and piano, then she seems to break free with the upbeat influence of crashing drums and an electric guitar tipping further into the indie music realm before touching back down in a simplistic note of tenderness.
Entirely immersive from the opening notes to the flourishing finish, ‘Buttercups’ is not only a rise and fall of sound; it is the flow and ebbing of emotion represented by sound. In ‘Distant’, Valianti explored loss and “life pulling you apart” – with ‘Buttercups’, she delves even deeper into the complexities of love, loss and life. Valianti explains:
“’Buttercups’ is a song that encapsulates the experience of love, loss, and searching for purpose. It’s a song that’s centred around memories that are hard to let go of – the cinnamon smell, the creaky doors, the buttercups – and how even when things are complicated, those memories remind me why I cared in the first place. This is one of my favourite songs I’ve ever created. I truly had so much fun making it, and I hope that comes across when you listen.”
