Jenna Kearns – I Wasn’t Ready (2025)
Described as one of Wales’ “most emotionally resonant emerging voices in indie-pop…”, singer-songwriter Jenna Kearns is one of those artists who touches your heart with her lyricism but is also the friend who “gets it” without saying a word. From national radio airtime and media features to use in the iconic US show Dance Moms, Kearns reaches audiences across the globe with awe-inspiring honesty, empowerment, and poignant reflections on personal growth. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘I Wasn’t Ready’.
If you have a liking for artists like Ellie Goulding and Dodie, the chances are highly likely you’ll take to Jenna Kearns. Following the release of 2024 singles, ‘Almost A Year’ and ‘Hear Me’, ‘I Wasn’t Ready’ is the fourth track from Kearns’ upcoming EP, My World Don’t Look Like Yours. Produced by Tom Auton, ‘I Wasn’t Ready’ is a harmonic rush of sophisticated indie-pop. Immersive, Auton takes you from the smooth glint of light on the sonic river’s surface to the ripples you feel when you put your hand beneath the water’s waves.
Combining a skin-chilling piano with the haunting violin, the melody offers an orchestral symphony; however, within the structure lies raw vulnerability. Almost angelic, Kearns’ sweet, twinkling vocals urge the song’s sense of fragility. Interestingly, as much as the melody kicks with that delicate vulnerability, its intricate lacing of tremulous sound with empowering lyricism makes the song a hopeful one.
Penned with Eleri Angharad and Rachel Walker-Mason, Jenna Kearns uses a personal narrative to share the message that living with chronic illnesses does not mean helplessness. She explains:
“In a moment I wasn’t supposed to survive, I knew I didn’t want to die. There was still so much I wanted to experience. Now, I live every day the best I can – so when my time comes, I’ll know I truly lived. What I went through could have been avoided if I had been listened to from the start. If sharing my story helps even one person push for a diagnosis or to feel seen, I’m proud of that. ”
