Daniel Bohn – Bonfire (2025)

Sauntering through various fields of metal music, singer-songwriter Daniel Bohn collects those sonic flowers with kaleidoscopic shimmers to create a progressive metal music bouquet. For several years now, US-based Bohn has been composing, recording and performing a mish-mash of metal for the masses; however, despite a signature sound emanating, his strides in the progressive scene continue with his eclectic design. The latest addition to his discography is the single, ‘Bonfire’.

Following the well-received 2024 tracks ‘Failure’ and ‘Gallant Guest’, Bohn enters 2025 (or at least the streaming side of things) with ‘Bonfire’. Recorded at his home studio with mixing and mastering by Martin Tides from Tides Studio, ‘Bonfire’ is truly not for the faint-hearted. Shifting from the softer melodic metal of ‘Failure’, this track is a feisty flare of tumultuous flames licking the ground like a bonfire.

Experimenting with synths, the melody is tinged with the bold beats and shimmering vivacity of the synths; however, this does not by any means touch the original ferocity of heavy metal. A dynamic bass accompanies weighty guitars with crashing drums, bringing a hard-hitting insanity to the tune. Yet, as much as each instrument demands attention with individuality, the overall track is a gritty whole bound by Bohn’s rugged screams. It’s like each spark committing to the heat, chaos and aggression of a blaring fire. The thing is, while the song oozes angst, it is actually a song of hope and empowerment.

“’Bonfire’ is a powerful anthem of defiance and rebirth, blending themes of darkness, resilience, and transcendence. Inspired by a mythic, almost apocalyptic journey, it channels the struggle of the “tarnished ones” – fallen but unbroken – who rise through suffering to reclaim purpose, challenge fate, and ignite a new age.” – Daniel Bohn on ‘Bonfire’

Powerful, brazen, abrupt and gritty, listening to ‘Bonfire’ is like tearing the plaster off an open wound, giving it a chance to breathe and heal. Currently working on a full-length album, Bohn is taking a break to write “more personal songs”. Until then, I am perfectly content to peruse his back catalogue and see what else there is to be enjoyed beyond ‘Bonfire’.
