Cathal Gavin – Out of Love (2025)

With the charisma of George Michael, the soul of Billy Joel and the beat of Sam Smith, singer-songwriter Cathal Gavin booms with the power of emotional melodies and poetic lyricism. His introduction to the music industry came when he turned 13 with the release of his 2015 album, Voice of an Angel. Since then, Gavin’s confident stage presence and his multi-octave vocal range bring the oomph to monumental performances. I mean, when you’re 16 years old performing for Pope Francis at the 2019 World Youth Day in Panama City, Central America – yeah, that’s something pretty wild.

Working with award-winning producer Billy Farrell of Deadeye Productions – known for his work with Bonnie Tyler, The Corrs, Westlife and Hozier – and undergoing tutelage with renowned vocal coach Deirdre Masterson, Cathal Gavin’s musical journey is on an upward trajectory with no signs of slowing down. Join us as we delve into his debut single, ‘Out of Love’.

As his debut, I haven’t much more to consider regarding his studio sound, at least not on Spotify; however, his performances captured on YouTube are as exciting as his debut single. Powerful and confident, Gavin stands tall with stand-out vocals, harnessing the emotional intimacy from his duet with Cristina Perri to his cover of Josh Groban’s ‘The Prayer’ – and that one was from his younger years before any training.

Now, you know those songs that send shivers down your spine, seep into your skin, and have you breathing each note instead of just listening to it – that’s Cathal Gavin’s ‘Out of Love’. Produced by Billy Farrell, the sophisticated track is a tight, solid rush of contemporary pop pouring forth with raw emotion and passion. The illusion of a synth-driven pop melody appears at the outset, but the arrangement incorporates strings, guitars, drums and percussion all melded together in a kaleidoscopic symphony. For me, however, it is Gavin’s vocals that lead the song, acting like an anchor in the sonic mire, yet inserting haunting vulnerability in each honey-coated word.

In addition to the single, Cathal Gavin released an official music video for ‘Out of Love’. You can view the video below and/or on his YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
