Lucas Assagba – Nosebleeds (2025)
Born in Bradford, England, and based in Leeds, singer-songwriter Lucas Assagba is releasing her new single ‘Nosebleeds’ on August 28, 2025, her second in anticipation of her forthcoming EP. Her previous single, ‘Comet’, explored darker tonalities and was featured in Vevo’s Emerging Artist playlist.
‘Nosebleeds’ takes a gentler approach as Assagba explores the aftermath of a traumatic event, one that, according to her, had been haunting her for some time. “The whole track materialised over the course of 24 hours,” she says of writing the song. “It was as if months… worth of tears and stress had led to this one moment. I was coming out of a really strange space in my life, and I couldn’t gather my thoughts about the stress I felt and how it had evolved over the past six months. I really love writing about the passage of time, and I suppose the whole song is about the changing of the seasons and how it affects our lives.”
‘Nosebleeds’ opens with a slow arpeggiated guitar line with a sound and speed not unlike something you might hear from Cigarettes After Sex, but while it touches on the same vibe, it doesn’t stay there, shortly growing to a bigger, guitar-driven sound. Chugging out a chunky pulse, Assagba sings of the changing of seasons as distance grows between a moment of sharp confrontation and a Ray Charles CD that haunts her “bedside tea.” The song builds nicely to an instrumental where lead guitars and layered rhythm guitars meet in a collision of distortion. Assagba lets the air out of the song nicely for the ending, letting things settle into a quiet finish.
This single has a much fuller sound than ‘Comet’, whose double-time section sounds curiously detached from the sense of urgency it was undoubtedly meant to communicate. But with ‘Nosebleeds’, everything lands nicely.
