Third Girl From The Left – Tick Tock (2025)

The younger sister of Portishead and Kate Bush, Third Girl From The Left turns adversity into art, celebrating the tragedies and triumphs of life in “…slightly unhinged art-pop with otherworldly alt-folk/rock.”  We were introduced to the UK-based musician several years ago with 2021’s ‘Here Am I’ and ‘The Mountain and The Wave’; skip ahead a few years, and we find ourselves faced with Third Girl once again. Join us as we delve headfirst into the most recent addition to her discography, ‘Tick Tock’.

Following the single ‘Hollowed’, the first since her upbeat 2023 song ‘Dance’, Third Girl From The Left saunters into 2025 with ‘Tick Tock’. As ‘Hollowed’ is seemingly a pivotal point in Third Girl’s sound, ‘Tick Tock’ simultaneously retains the alternative-pop of yesteryear but layers it with a fusion of dark-pop with avant-garde sentiments. Perhaps this side-step is only to my ears, but it appears Third Girl’s music is more confident, more mature, and more sophisticated.

The first collaborative piece from Third Girl From The Left, ‘Tick Tock’ is co-penned, performed and produced with drummer Mike Wood. At first, ‘Tick Tock’ is a soft push of synth-driven music backed by a pulsating beat similar to a ticking bomb; however, this track is not only a tune pouring from the speakers, it is an immersive experience where the feeling of the melody is an expression of the message.

Sparse and barebones, but kaleidoscopic in its elegant textures, ‘Tick Tock’ is a call to arms to “…curb the destructive impact of greed on the natural world.” Third Girl From The Left explains:

“We’re all guilty of not doing enough; it’s such a complex problem, but one that should be at the top of everyone’s priority list. We are becoming more disconnected with the natural world, yet we are a part of it, not a separate entity. We need more awareness and education of our impact so that we can work towards solutions.”
