Tonneau – Crush On You (2025)
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Ton van Dijk, Tonneau is an Amsterdam-based trio that is, well, never the same from one song to the next. From the folk-rock-infused 2024 debut, ‘First Are To Be Last’, to the indie-rock sound of ‘Home Ahead’, and the upbeat, cabaret meets alternative pop ‘Here We Go Again’, Tonneau has one constant: expect the unexpected. Joining the stylings of Ton van Dijk (vocals and guitar), Jan van der Hoeven (drums and keys), and Alies van der Hoeven (strings), the trio are turning heads far beyond their Dutch borders. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Crush On You’.
Following the folk-tinged indie-pop ballad, ‘Like Lovers Do’, ‘Crush On You’ picks up the pace with its toe-tapping, upbeat rush of indie-folk. Flickering with duality, ‘Crush On You’ is a fun tune that you can immediately dance to, swirling about in a glittering haze of wistful sound with your hair flowing loose. There is a sense of freedom in its innocent playfulness. An orchestral combination of smooth strings brings the folk feeling, while percussion adds the oomph to this beautiful event; keys peep from the background, but it all enhances the utter release from a mundane day.
The rich vocals are entwined with vocal coach, Elaine, adding extra charm in the background; however, duality exists as the warm sounds unpick a weightier, more profound theme and message. Tonneau explains:
“The spark for ‘Crush On You’ came from the fascination of watching people dance – that mix of joy, tension, and the fear of making a wrong step. On a deeper level, the song is touched by today’s conversations around power and desire, especially in the wake of the #MeToo movement… The song plays with these layers – light and euphoric on the surface, yet carrying an undercurrent of tension about how admiration can turn into temptation, and how fragile the dance between control and surrender can be.”
