Thammarat – Single Umbrella (2025)
Describing his journey as an artist as, “I learned that I could be loud in a beautiful way, and I haven’t shut up since…”, singer-songwriter Thammarat turns life experiences into beautiful narratives and evocative, engaging melodies. Inspired by the likes of Josh Groban and Ben Platt, the US-based artist’s music is, well, a bit dramatic. Drawing together elements of synth-pop, indie, and chamber music, Thammarat offers emotional honesty that is “…intimate, cinematic, and often unexpected”; well, it left me in the heart-thumping, intoxicating, soul-stirring whirl of kaleidoscopic music I so closely associate with Josh Groban. Join us as we delve into Thammarat’s most recent release, ‘Single Umbrella’.
Following his 2025 track, ‘Normal’, ‘Single Umbrella’ finds and then blurs the line between traditional pop music in a synth-driven foundation and the elegance of classical symphony, with a reminiscence of Groban’s powerful vocals. The bouncy beat of synth-pop with Thammarat’s twinkling falsetto adds a bold rush of joyfulness, flitting past your head with kaleidoscopic sparkles, but, and this is for me, the gradual diminuendo to an organic orchestral tone with heart-warming strings and dulcet tenor is the better part of two songs seemingly stitched together as one.
Produced by Steph Gemm, the movement from upbeat, high-speed tempo to the softer, more soothing sound is intriguing and very clever. It captures the core of ‘Single Umbrella’ – a song of different speeds expressing the craziness and lulling gentleness of summer romances. Thammarat explains:
“A timeless reminder to carpe diem, especially when it comes to love… a magical yet undeniably familiar picture of the quintessential summer fling – crosswalk encounters, pastoral meadows, starry nights, and final hugs – all under the shelter of a single umbrella… I wanted to capture the magic of summer love… and the overall beauty of its impermanence.”
Sincere, sentimental, and not a track to be ignored, ‘Single Umbrella’ is a great introduction to Thammarat. I am eager to hear more from this talented musician.
