Phil – Home (2025)
The solo project of Vienna-based musician Phil Woloch, Phil (just Phil) is an indie-pop project binding vintage Elton John-esque sounds with contemporary melodies. An oscillation between reflection and celebration, intimately personal and universally ageless, bold and fragile, vulnerable and confident – duality, wrapped in a resonating rush of music. Join us as we jump into his sophomore single, ‘Home’.
Produced by Richard Messner, Phil uses ‘Home’ to drag you back to the 1970s/1980s pop scene in a kaleidoscopic soundscape of wistful sighs, heart-warming whispers, and the link of distracted sincerity. Following the well-received debut track, ‘Mind At Ease’, ‘Home’ retains Phil’s upbeat, toe-tapping, smile-inducing attitude; however, there is a lingering sense of vulnerability entwined in the single. Perhaps this is in the rhythmic synths and soaring guitars, or perhaps it’s in the smooth tranquillity of Phil’s piano. For me, it is the rich, warm vocals that caress you and hold you close like an old friend who you haven’t seen for a while and can’t wait to have that cup of tea and conversation.
Melodically, ‘Home’ has a beautiful wash of sound twirling about you, setting your mind at ease. Yes, that was the debut single’s title, but ‘Home’ moves from “celebrating the coming of age” to a more mature, sophisticated dance of hindsight and reflection. Phil explains:
“’Home’ is a luminous, road-movie-style retro-pop song: synth-led, with a driving bass foundation and a big, hopeful chorus about finding your way back to yourself. The lyric moves from raw confession to resolute confidence – a song that feels both intimate and universal… the perfect companion for late-night drives, quiet reflection, and rediscovering your centre.”
So, what’s my overall opinion of Phil and ‘Home’? Sincere, insightful, honest and genuine, ‘Home’ is the soundtrack to an 80s film about finding that path to a comfortable… well, home. Considering his debut single and this sophomore track, Phil is on a steady course to emerge as a prominent indie-pop artist. My one hope is that he hasn’t peaked too soon. Time will tell.
