One Flew Over – Eyes Open (2025)

Sitting alongside contemporaries like Florence + The Machine, Hozier, and even a slip of Amanda Palmer in some songs, One Flew Over is a band sauntering through the realms of rock, picking a colourful sonic bouquet bound by a golden soul-filled ribbon. Combining the talents of vocalist Irene Ni Chiunn and multi-instrumentalist Martin Quinn, the Irish duo offer melodies that are as obscure and eclectic as they are established and soothing. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Eyes Open’.

Following the critically acclaimed tracks ‘Last Man Standing’ and ‘The You Show’, One Flew Over release the rhythmic single, ‘Eyes Open’. Recorded and produced by Martin Quinn at JAM Studios, ‘Eyes Open’ is a melodic concoction of kaleidoscopic diversity. Powerful drums meet a soaring guitar, while a shimmering piano slices across the melody. For me, however, it is not the fusion of those elements that brings that little something-something to ‘Eyes Open’. Like a mini-symphonic orchestra, a wave of strings floods the track, bringing a classical flair to contemporary free-fall.

The instrumentation itself is intriguing, but it is the arrangement that enhances the raw emotion of ‘Eyes Open’. Softly and steadily, you glide across the sonic river with comfort and a big smile on your face. Languid and tranquil, the slight ripples are just groovy vibes in a serene song; then it hits. A swell of strings, a crash of drums, soaring guitars and percussion rear as a wall of sound that then covers you with tumultuousness and frenzied urgency. From the calm and serene to the soul-stirring whip of powerful sound, ‘Eyes Open’ is a rollercoaster of music tossing you about, while the smooth vocals continue to caress your face with a hopeful embrace.

A song of painful deception, ‘Eyes Open’ “…paints the portrait of a fallen angel with so many faces, symbolising the deceptive glow of early love… the narrator confronts the painful truth: nothing was real… a visceral journey from blind devotion to brutal clarity crafted to resonate with anyone who loved too deeply, too soon.”
