Track of the Day: Brandon Frizzell – Distracted (2025)
Writing songs to capture moments, singer-songwriter Brandon Frizzell reflects on life in its totality with the good and bad bits. He shares that “…time is precious and music makes them last”, and as such, he offers insights into nostalgia with every melody – tragic or triumphant. While Frizzell is already turning heads with his moving music, confident performances, and engaging demeanour, the US-based artist is only now hitting our musical radar. Are we fans? Well, join us as we jump into his single ‘Distracted’ and find out.
Following the singles ‘Daze’, ‘Crossroads’ and ‘Hazel Eyes’, ‘Distracted’ showcases another side to Frizzell’s multi-faceted personality. While ‘Crossroads’ leaned toward a pop-inspired tone, ‘Daze’ tapped into old-school funk, and ‘Hazel Eyes’ is driven by 90s alternative rock, ‘Distracted’ has Frizzell nodding his hat to contemporary folk-pop stylings. Recorded in his home studio, the track is like a shimmering sonic tapestry. The smooth guitar weaves across in a bright red, while steady drums shimmer with bold blues, but it is the funky piano with its golden-tailed flair that adds something special to the single. Add the cheeky whistles, and you have a tune that is fun, infectious, toe-tapping, and smile-inducing.
As much as ‘Distracted’ is a bubble of happy vibes, its inspiration and concept are not necessarily the most enchanting. Inspired by the Charlie Kirk assassination, Frizzell took a look at the growing interest on social media and decided it was time to evaluate the effect of technology on our lives. We’re distracted, disillusioned, disingenuous, and quickly swirling about the whirlpool of constant technological distraction. Frizzell explains:
“Distracted’ is a modern reflection on how technology and constant connectivity are quietly eroding real human connection… It is relatable to everything we are seeing nowadays – everyone is sucked into their phones and devices, and it’s controlling their lives… It speaks to a generation glued to screens but longing for something real… In a world ruled by technology, the greatest act of strength is rebellion.”
Sincere, honest, insightful, and brimming with introspection, ‘Distracted’ is a song I’ll have on repeat and will probably start humming as I go about my day. If this is anything to go by, I am keen to hear more from this talented musician.
