Tom Minor – Bring Back The Good Ol’ Boys (2025)

Bringing us his own brand of “existential indie” – an enigmatic blend of power-pop, rock, new wave, punk, soul, R&B, and anything else you can think of – singer-songwriter Tom Minor’s music brims with originality, innovation, eclecticism, and authenticity. Constantly delving into the intricacies, complexities and general mystery that is life, Minor takes us on journeys of triumph, angst, fear, tragedy, bliss, and overall intrigue. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Bring Back The Good Ol’ Boys’.

Brimming with old-school Britpop sounds in the lines of Dodgy, Minor blends dynamic drums, a bold bass, and a soaring guitar with shimmering percussion, adding a twinkle to the mix. Toe-tapping and light-hearted with an infectious pop-inspired swoosh of fun, one can easily imagine stomping, dancing, and singing along with massive grins to ‘Bring Back The Good Ol’ Boys’. Interestingly, while there is a vibe of cheerful whimsy, the single is weightier with profound lyricism.

Following his single, ‘Next Stop Brixton’, Minor joins forces with long-term collaborator, Teaboy Palmer, in his new release. Unlike ‘The Loneliest Person On Earth’ and ‘Next Stop Brixton’ – songs that delved into feelings of regret, loneliness, liberation and empowerment – ‘Bring Back The Good Ol’ Boys’ tackles indifference, confusion, and the universal theme of repeating mistakes. Minor explains:

“The… new single is a tongue-in-cheek take on our limitless ability to repeat old mistakes, fall for the promises of authoritarian leaders and willingly ignore the fact that those shows often end not with a wistful last waltz but the ominous beat of our own marching feet.”

Sincere, sentimental, introspective and honest, Tom Minor slaps your back, gives you a cheeky grin, and guides you through the realm of indifference and ignorance with ‘Bring Back The Good Ol’ Boys’. I have only two complaints about the track. First, it is far too short, coming in a two-and-a-half minutes, and next, the fact that there isn’t any official video or at least a live session. Other than that, Minor has astounded once again.
