Track of the Day: Tommy Schneider – The Song Remains (2023)

Embracing his passion for music at a young age, Tommy Schneider picked up the flute at age 10. Approximately 10 years later, a saxophone made its way to Schneider…and the rest, as they say, is history. After several decades of playing jazz, writing songs, and sharing his stirring music with the masses, this US-based songster headed back to his roots/garage rock foundation. While this is my introduction to Tommy Schneider, he has already reached audiences far beyond my little bubble on Earth. Come with us as we jump into his intriguing discography.

On the heels of his debut single ‘Playing Your Guitar’, Tommy Schneider releases the track ‘The Song Remains’. While the songs are separate, there is a unique tie between them. First, they were written within weeks of each other and inspired the same theme. Next, ‘The Song Remains’ feeds off the meaning of ‘Playing Your Guitar’ continuing the tale.

Penned about his relationship with musician David Rhodes Brown who sadly passed after a struggle with cancer, ‘Playing Your Guitar’ was written about their “early days together in the Falcons when the band was just starting…” ‘The Song Remains’ draws from this tribute song to describe how songs can be independent constructs.

“’The Song Remains’ is about how a song might have a life of its own independent of the person who wrote or sang it. So, I think of it as a song about songs and people who pull them from the ether to share.” – Tommy Schneider on ‘The Song Remains’

Winding folk into a simplistic acoustic rock sound, Schneider captures your heart with a rather eclectic single. ‘The Song Remains’ has richness and warmth but there is an odd disconnect between the vocals and instrumentation. Think of the melody as a marble inside a shroud of silvery gauze with Schneider’s dulcet voice teetering on one side and the instrumentation on the other, all playing in unison but with a hollow sparseness between. Perhaps it is a profound representation of the singer being gone but the song remaining. The one thing I know for sure is this track grasps at your heart, sends shivers down your spine and sends your soul soaring.
