Ananda Xenia Shakti and Love Power the Band – The Perfumed Garden (2026)

Most well known as the founding member of the all-female punk band, B-Girls, singer-songwriter Ananda Xenia Shakti has cast aside her punk-fuelled angst to embrace a conscious evolution, healing, and the celebration of life in all its forms. Taking us on meditative journeys through love and positive energy, Shakti entwines her yoga training and musicality in an outburst of somewhat indefinable sound. Today, we delve into her most recent release, ‘The Perfumed Garden’.

Following her UK chart-topping single ‘Psychedelic Halo’ – released in 2023 – Ananda Xenia Shakti and Love Power the Band make a pivotal turn with ‘The Perfumed Garden’. While the track retains the fearlessness and obscurity of previous work, the new single marks a new chapter for the group. Infused with a Middle Eastern style, it captures the heart of Krishna, Radha and divine unity in its twirl of eclectic vocals, simplistic piano, and experimental eclecticism.

I find the track particularly interesting as it combines the simplicity of a barebones journey with a kaleidoscopically complex flush of music. Performing entirely out of her traditional register, Shakti’s vocals simultaneously guide you through the hazy garden and pull you into a dance to forget your worries and merely exist. A bold falsetto, reminiscent of Kate Bush, Shakti offers serenity and wildness delicately yet brashly exuding from the track.

“While staying here in India, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to spend time in retreat with the Baul Singers, and it was after one of the retreats… that I wrote this song, or should I say, that it wrote me? It’s called ‘The Perfume Garden’, which means the divine union, and its energy compels us to realise that this union is with us at all times, everywhere that we are; but we need to break through the predictable, the day-to-day, the ordinary to be able to have that moment of divine union… I feel like I became its voice, calling out with passion that it’s here…walk to it… be with it.” – Ananda Xenia Shakti and Love Power the Band on ‘The Perfumed Garden’
