Con Piliouras – The Letter I Never Wrote (2026)

Specialising in a variety of different sounds, styles and genres, composer Con Piliouras aims to “…bridge the gap between classic songwriting and modern production.” Long-time listeners might recognise his work under his name, Constantinos Piliouras; however, as Con Piliouras, the South Australia-based musician swerves in a new direction, linking past compositions with new vulnerability. Inviting us to “…follow the journey as he explores the stories we often leave unspoken”, we find ourselves delving into his most recent release, ‘The Letter I Never Wrote’.

Composed, recorded and produced by Con Piliouras, ‘The Letter I Never Wrote’ combines classical guitar with a supportive string quintet – two violins, viola, cello, and double bass. Reflecting that desire to bridge contemporary and classical sounds, ‘The Letter I Never Wrote’ is a wash of modern classical music with the acoustic guitar driving the song; however, just as it acts as the lead, its interplay with the string section seems to act like a conversation between friends. We’re all sitting around a campfire with the hum of talk – lilts here and there – in a cinematic whirl of warmth and honesty.

The composition might be defined as a classical sonata, but ‘The Letter I Never Wrote’ is more than a classical structure. With strong folk music vibes, the track captures the charm of old-school Simon & Garfunkel or Tracey Chapman, but without the words. It’s a vibe, a groove, a sound that slithers into your ears, taps at your heart, and finds that bubble of contemporary mish-mash within an invisible classical cage.

In all honesty, I’m often drawn to songs with lyrics and poignant messages in those words; however, Piliouras proves that all you need is an instrument to evoke the most powerful raw emotion. He explains: “Overall, the piece carries so many nostalgic moments, emotions, bittersweet feelings – harmonic progressions that shift the mood in such a lovely way. It’s never out of place.”
