Frieda Star – Mothers And Sisters (2026)
If you’re looking for a great-sounding track that also carries an important message, then the relentless debut from Frieda Star is the one for you. The song was penned after singer Garran Hickman’s girlfriend fell victim to up-skirting whilst on the train home. The angst he felt after this sickening act is evident, and the band hopes this release highlights the misogyny which is still rife in today’s world.
Frieda Star describe themselves as a working-class four-piece and is an independent band based in Wolverhampton. They perform their debut Birmingham show on the 7th of this month. They share the same dynamic sound as the likes of Biffy Clyro.
There is a scintillating energy to the track, which is built on Xavier Al-Naqib’s bass, which keeps the song flowing. We’re treated to some dazzling guitar work by James Knott and explosive drumming by Scarlett Churchill. The lyrics are uncompromising, which is understandable given its serious subject matter: “This bastard’s only just picked up his phone / I almost heard him groan / Like he asked her to pose / As he dared to pry to the place you don’t” It is important for society to have uncomfortable conversations about the kind of sexual assaults described in this song.
Hickman delivers an effective rap-style vocal over a lush production by Simon Henley. There are some lovely backing vocals contributed by Churchill. The second verse reflects more on the aftermath of the assault: “I shouldn’t be your chaperone / This would’ve never happened at home / But the street full of dogs and girls are bones” That kind of analogy is fairly striking and hard-hitting. The middle eight section is stunning and helps the track reach a worthy, breath-taking climax.
‘Mothers And Sisters’ has already been endorsed by NME, by them adding it to their New Bangers Playlist. It is a testament to the “blood, sweat and tears” that Frieda Star have said went into the making of this release. I am truly excited for more socially conscious music from this exhilarating band from the Black Country.
In addition to the single, Frieda Star released an official music video for ‘Mothers And Sisters’. You can view it below and/or on their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
