SHANNON DARCY – Control Freak (2026)
Known for her energetic, enthusiastic, somewhat rambunctious and innovative swirl of hard-hitting, get-up-and-jump-about, genre-diverse music, SHANNON DARCY is a whirlwind with pink hair (at least it was pink in a couple of photographs), and a bad-ass attitude. While she might appear a bundle of fun with a sweet smile and mischievous eyes, the Essex-based singer-songwriter is more than a kid singing some songs; she’s an award-winning artist – winner of Best Female Artist at 2025’s South East Entertainment Awards – and performed at notable venues like the O2 London. Today, we take a look at her discography, jumping headfirst into her most recent release, ‘Control Freak’.
Following her well-received EP, Just Worried Because, SHANNON DARCY enters 2026 with ‘Control Freak’. An eclectic artist, DARCY’s EP showcased her punk-rock, alternative rock, and pop-rock mix of sound; however, ‘Control Freak’ is a pivot for her retaining the punk sentimentality, but with a soulful blush of old-school pop-rock meets pop-punk. In her words, “This one is a whole new vibe, and I’m absolutely buzzing for everyone to hear it!”
Recorded and produced with Jim Hustwit, the track is a melodic blend of heavy drums, a soaring guitar, and a bold bass keeping the beat. Each aspect presents with an individual prominence, yet comes together in a harmonic wave of in-your-face music. A vivid, vibrant tune, ‘Control Freak’ has a way of washing over you, inspiring you to get up and shout aloud with rage and vulnerability, but mostly liberation and empowerment. Interestingly, as much as the song hits you between the eyes with its heavy tone, DARCY’s rich vocals soothe the edges with an oddly honey-soaked tempestuousness, taunting the control freak and reclaiming your power. She explains:
“I wrote it when I was feeling pissed off and fed up, like I was being walked all over by certain people who think they have a right to dictate the things I do and control who I am… It’s sarcastic and petty af, but it was so much fun to record with the incredible Jim Hustwit. So, honestly? If there’s someone that comes to mind when you think about a ‘control freak’, I think you should blast this tune out loud!”
