PREP – Do What You Gotta (ft. Sunset Rollercoaster) (2026)
‘Do What You Gotta’ is the latest delicious slice of modern yacht-rock from UK band PREP. It is the kind of feel-good track that, despite us being in the dead of winter, makes us think ahead to sunnier days. The track is a collaboration with the Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster. Both had been wanting to work together for years, and this finally came to fruition after a jam session at Sunset Rollercoaster’s own recording studio.
This is an irresistible piece of crafted pop. As mentioned earlier, ‘yacht-rock’ is a term which fits the band quite well. PREP even have a little yacht after their name on Instagram! The band’s sound has a lot of similarities with the likes of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald or even Daft Punk. You can even imagine Donald Fagen of the aforementioned Steely Dan singing the bridge: “I know these moments don’t come easy for you…” It’s clear that PREP know their music to take inspiration from such legendary artists. The track features a gentle bass over soft drums; there are also gorgeous guitars and classic synths.
This coming together of PREP and Sunset Rollercoaster showcases a shared musical knowledge that transcends borders. Both are extremely successful in South East Asia. PREP sent their draft of ‘Do What You Gotta’ to Sunset Rollercoaster, and it returned with additional guitar parts and Kuo singing the second verse. They hope to perform the track live together in the very near future. The lyrics seem to describe having regrets about the past, but with an acceptance that since you can’t change those, you should enjoy life to the full. The track has a lovely vocal from frontman Tom Havlelock: “Do what you gotta / Throw away the plan / Just do what you gotta do / Get love where you can”.
‘Do What You Gotta’ is the first track to be released from the forthcoming EP, The One Day In The Sun, due for release on 20th March. PREP have already released two studio albums, 2020’s self-titled and last year’s The Programme. Their inspired cover of Harry Styles’ ‘As It Was’ has racked up 51 million streams on Spotify alone.
‘Do What You Gotta’ is an infectious piece of summery pop crafted by musicians who clearly know how to play.
